Acetamide derivs. of formula (I) are new: (where R1=(m)ethyl, or chloro; R=isopropyl, metfhoxyethyl,beta-cyclopropylmethyl, methylcyclopropyl or a 3C (un)saturated linear hydrocarbon which may be alpha-substd. by (m)ethyl or beta-substd. by methul). (I) are useful in the treatment of grass areas which are difficult to cut, crops of cereals tobacco, and soya. Applied at 0.1-10 (2.5-5) kg/ha. Pref. (I) have R=propyl opt. substd. in the alpha or beta-position by methyl. In an example, 2,6-dimethyl aniline acet-opr pylamide was treated with chloroacetylchloride in benzene in the presence of sodium carbonate to give (I; R1=CH3; R=propyl).
