1528705 Guerbet alcohols HENKEL KG AUF AKTIEN 3 Aug 1976 [4 Aug 1975] 32252/76 Heading C2C A branched alcohol of general formula wherein R 1 and R 2 , which may be the same or different, are alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkylalkyl, phenylalkyl or alkylphenylalkyl groups having 2-22 carbon atoms, is formed by condensing an alcohol of formula with an alcohol of formula under substantially anhydrous conditions in the presence of an alkali and a catalyst at 80 to 400‹ C., the molar ratio of alkali to alcohol being from 0À01 : 1 to 0À5 : 1, and recovering the branched alcohol produced; the catalyst is 0À05 to 3À0 g., per mole total alcohol being condensed, of an insoluble lead salt of an oxyacid of a Group IV element.
