Water cooled gas withdrawal shaft for steel converters - has cup shaped inlet section to improve gas flow

The inlet area of the shaft in the horizontal plane corresponds approximately with the size of the mouth of the converter, and is situated at a distance from it. The upwards running section of the shaft is provided with material traps in the direction of suction and is provided with water cooling pipes in the walls. The inlet opening to the shaft, in vertical section, is cup shaped, and the lower rim of the opening is virtually horizontal. The cup shaped lower portion of the shaft avoids contraction effects and recirculation areas in the gas flow, and minimises the effect of gas impulses on the wall, thus reducing wear on the shaft of prior art types (e.g. of DT 1433684 and 1433568).
