The mechanism for loading pallets comprises a frame with a receiving surface, preferably provided with conveyor rollers between which the rod-shaped carrier members of a loading fort are movable. The loading fork is used to repeatedly lift a layer to be loaded from the surface and move it laterally to, and lower it on to a pallet on a loading surface. The loading surface has a number of stations for pallets and can be moved so as to bring individual stations within reach of the loading fork. The surface may be rotatable about a vertical axis and have the stations regularly spaced around this axis. One of the stations other than the loading station may connect with a roller track for removing the loaded pallets.
