The castor wheel (10) for a piece of furniture has a hub rotatable on a shaft (12) carried in a fork, and a wheel brake which is automatically released when there is a load on the fork, the brake consisting of a brake spring (14) which forces the wheel (10) and a non-rotatable component (12) together when there is no load. The brake spring is arranged below the wheel shaft (12) between the shaft and the hub the shaft being secured in the fork. The shaft may have a recess inside the hub in which recess the brake spring is contained. The shaft may have circular-section portions on either side of the recess, which portions fit in the hub bore with a small radial clearance.
