A profiled billet having a surface stepped in cross-section is produced from a rectangular metal billet by the billet being pulled past a shaping tool which has a cutting edge corresponding to the profile. In order to ensure that the billet is exactly aligned with the shaping tool during the pulling, the billet is subjected to a back pull or braking pull. A shaping attachment (10) carries an adjustable shaping tool (11) in a tool holder (15). This tool holder is supported on a slide rest (14) via horizontal and vertical setting devices (18, 19).
