Chroman derivs. of formula (I) and their salts are new: (R9 = CH3 or C2H5, R10 = H or CH3, R11 = H or CH3, R12 = H, halo, 1-6C alkyl, 2-6 C alkenyl, 1-6C alkoxy, 2-6C alkenyloxy, 1-6C alkylthio, NO2, CF3, 2-7C acylamino or CN). R13 = R14 or R14O. R 14 = 18C hydrocarbyl opt. substd. by halo. X = bond, CH2, CH2CH2, CH2CH2CHi, CH=CH or O). Also claimed is the intermediate trans-4-piperidino-3,4-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-nitro-2H-benzo(b)py- ran-3-ol (II) and its pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts. (I) are antihypertensives. They are given generally at 1-250, e.g. 2-100 mg/day for a 70 kg person, opt. together with beta-adrenergic blockers, diuretics and/or other antihypertensives. (II) also has antihypertensive action with minimal side effects on the heart. In an example trans-4-piperidino-3,4-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-6-nitro-2H-benzo(b)py- ran-3-yl acerate was prepd. by acetylation of the 3-ol.
