However the liquid levels in the anolyte and catholyte compartments are maintained below that between the electrodes. A telescopic pipe 18c connected with outlet 18 controls the liquid level in the catholyte compartment. A hollow tube 18h permits adjustment and breaks any syphon effect. A similar arrangement 18d controls the aralyte level. The cathodes may be mild steel, copper, silver or stainless steel. The anodes may be lead, or silver coated with PbO 2 , MnO 2 or Fe 3 O 4 or a value metal i.e. Ti, Ta, Zr or W coated with a Pt metal or its oxide. To coat a Ti anode, TiCl 3 in HCl is dissolved in methanol. H 2 O 2 and RuCl 3 3H 2 O are added. The mixture is applied to the anode in a series of coats and baked at 350‹C for 5 minutes at each coating. A final treatment of 450‹C for 15 minutes - 1 hour may follow.
