In a slide and guide assembly the guide (12) is a pillar of open cross-section eg of angle section. The slide (20) engages the outside and extends around the inside of the angle section. The slide is lockable to the pillar by a pair of opposite wedges (31). The edges are arranged between the slide and the inside of the pillar section. A screw (36) draws the wedges together in the direction of the length of the pillar to lock them. The slide may be a fitting for holding a blackboard.
