The prepn. of acetic acid comprises reacting acetone, isobutylaldehyde, methyl ethyl ketone or sec. butanol, with O2 in the gas phase in the presence of a catalyst contg. V and utilising steam, the reaction being effected at 3-10 esp. 5-6 bars. press. the steam contg. 1-10 mol %. Water, and CO2 being opt. present. A suitable reactor is described. Pure conc. acetic acid is obtained.
