In a method of manufacture, part of the sheet interconnecting the supply conductors, made from a common sheet of material, is present during moulding and subsequently removed. Block 2 may be of glass or ceramic, cathode and terminals obtained by etching a N i -Fe or Cr-Fe sheet, and anode 6 may be a perforated metal plate, fine wire mesh or tin oxide on a transparent substrate, an expanded plate or a plurality of anodes. Dimensions are disclosed, the cavities may be square in crosssection and filled with pure Ne or Ne with 2% argon at 150 Torr, and optical radiation may be from only the negative-glow portion. The device is initially aged by sputtering metal on the cavity walls, the spacing between anode and cavity open ends preventing short circuiting.
