Cleaving perfluoro, linear (co) polyethers with peroxide oxygen bridges (I), comprises reacting the (co)polyether at -30 to +250 deg.C, pref. 20-100 deg.C, and when a solvent is used, at a pressure of 1-200 atm., pref. 1-100 atm., with a reducing agent in the form of molecular hydrogen; nascent hydrogen; primary or secondary alcohols, either alone or in the presence of aluminium alkoxides; simple hydrides; complex boron or aluminium hydrides; sulphur dioxide; and alkali metal sulphite; hydrogen sulphide; on alkali metal sulphide; hydrazine; hydroxylamine; hypophosphorous acid; phosphorous acid; stannous chloride; or hydrogen iodide; and optionally subjecting the pdt. to hydrolysis, salt formation, esterification or amidation of the acid groups and/or addition of water, alcohols or amines onto the keto groups of the perfluoroacetonyl groups. X-O-(C3F6O)p-(CF2O)q-(C2F4O)r-(O)s-Y (I) -CF3 (IIa), -CF(CF3)-O-CF3 (IIb), -COF (IIc), -CF2-COF (IId), -CF(CF3)-COF (IIe), -CF2COCF3 (IIf). where the different oxyperfluoroalkylene units are randomly distributed over the chain; X = groups (IIa)-(IIf), or a group produced by hydrolysis, salt formation, esterification or amidation of the carbofluoride group, or by addition of water, alcohols, or amines onto the keto groups; -(O)- = an oxygen atom placed randomly in the chain; p, q and r = integers from 0 to 100, with the condition that (p+r) is not O, and (p+q+r) is between 10 and 100; S=a number between 1 and 90, so that the quotient s/(p+q+r) is between 0.01 and 0.9 pref. between 0.1 and 0.5; and (p+r)-s is always positive.
