Machine for winding coil layers using wire with extremely thin cross sectional area. The wire is wound on the mandrel of the winding machine and is incorporated in a feed guide system. Before winding the coil, the mandrel (1) is wrapped with a foil (4) which adheres to the wire (5). The foil and winding is removed from the mandrel after the required number of turns and the foil separated from the coil in a different process. When winding the coil on a former with two flanges, the foil is held in position between the flanges by a vacuum process. The thickness of the foil is less than one sixth the diameter of the wire.
