A hardness tester, in partic. a micro-hardness tester, with a penetration body which can be lowered under load of a weight is designed to enable accurate hardness measurements to be made at different temperatures, including temperature considerably different from ambient. The penetration body and the loading wt. are pressed together in a single unit moving in a guide and suspended from a vertically movable support. - When the penetration body is in contact with the sample object it is detached from the suspending mount. The suspending wire is heated by electrical current. The tester and sample may be mounted in a temp. controlled housing.
