Piezo-electric transducer and probes - for destroying bladder ureter and kidney pelvis-stones with ultrasonic vibration

A longitudinal section of the transducer is shown. Cylindrical blocks of steel and aluminium respectively clamp between them the piezo-electric plates. The aluminium cylinder is threaded to engage with the high tensile bolt. On the projecting threaded end an accurately flat washer provides a surface on to which the internally threaded end of a probe is firmly screwed. Each probe consists of a wire shrouded in plastic and carrying at its outer end a small cup-shaped anvil for destroying the stone. Another cup may be used in conjunction with the probes for removal of debris by suction. A fully transistorised power source and control circuit provides an output of 10 to 28 KHz.
