An illumination device for a photographic enlarger unit consisting of a large number of lights which can be selectively turned on or off has the lights (16) arranged in one or more planes roughly parallel to the negative plane to produce an uneven level of illumination across the negative (27) matched to the transmissivity of the negative (27) itself. The requisite distribution and pattern of lighting for the negative is produced by means of a projection of the negative onto the projection table (13) prior to the actual exposure of the negative onto photographic material.
