The machine is particularly for delivering newspaper proofs to a separating mechanism, and incorporates a conveyor belt transporting the overlapping enclosures to the latter. A barrier plate extends into the path of the enclosures, and is periodically caused to vibrate by a drive mechanism. The direction of vibration of the plate is such that shock impulses are transmitted to the enclosures in the opposite direction to that in which they travel, the effect being to align them. The front of the plate can lie at an acute angle to the direction of travel of the items. The plate can be arranged so that with each complete vibration cycle it performs a movement against the direction of travel and one at an acute angle to it.
