The drive mechanism is particularly for use with self-propelled portal cranes and straddle carriers handling standardised freight containers, the wheels being driven on one side of the crane etc. only, and those at opposite ends turning in opposite directions on vertical swivel pins for steering, under the action of a common steering mechanism. The engine housing and transmission (5) are situated on the same side as the driven wheels (12, 13), and each driven travel wheel has an axle gearbox (27, 28) with a vertical input shaft (35, 36). The latter is coaxial with the respective swivel pin, and the axle gearbox swivel together with their respective wheels. When travelling, all the drive shafts (35, 36) rotate in the same direction. Where the crane has twin travel wheels, the axle gearboxes can be mounted in between those in each pair.
