Contact freezing of foodstuffs in a multi-stage apparatus, with carriers for the material to be frozen, comprises loading and unloading he carriers at a central position in an intermittent movement circuit, and moving them from the loading to the unloading station through the separate stages of the contact freezing apparatus via slide tracks with periodic lifting of the contact plates installed between the slide tracks and with reversal at the top of the apparatus from one stage to the next succeeding stage. - A particular feature of the process is that the period for which the contact plates are lifted off to permit movement of the carriers is always less than the time of application of the contact plates on the carriers, all of which are then in the stack of plates, the reversing devices at the top of the apparatus being free of carriers.
