A strip winding reel has pressure rollers (3a-7a) to press the strips (2) onto the core (1) of the reel as the strip is wound up. The reel core is coupled with a pulse generator connected to a pulse counter which is started as soon as the end (8) of the strip lies on the core without slip. As the core rotates over an angle equal to that between two adjacent rollers, a signal from the counter is fed, via a logic circuit, to the appropriate servo valve. Each valve controls the lifting of the corresponding actuating cylinder (3-7) of that roller which needs to be lifted by an amount corresponding with the thickness (s) of the strip.
