Detoxicating tobacco, cigars and cigarettes - by generating catalyst while smoking pref, achieved by adding metal nitrates of hydroxides

Detoxicating tobacco, cigars and/or cigarettes takes place by generating a catalyst during actual combustion of the tobacco, in order to lower toxic material content in combustion gas. This is pref. achieved by admixing the tobacco with either (a) metal salts of N oxyacids, esp. metal nitrate/s or (b) metal hydroxides. The additive-contg. toxicity-reduced tobaccos obtd. are specifically claimed. Catalyst generated during combustion is partic. active and smoke contains less toxic materials, esp. less NO and CO. Catalysts used include those which are unstable in isolated form. O2 released on using nitrates prevents extinguishing of glowing tobacco esp. when smoking a pipe, and obviates need for drawing pipe. Additives having an acid character adsorb or adsorb various toxic materials, esp. nicotinic acid.
