Detoxication of tobacco, cigars and/or cigarettes takes place by adding matls. which, on burning, generate an adequate quantity of a catalyst to lower the content of toxic matls. in combustion gas and in smoke. The catalyst-forming matls. contain main or side-gp. metals or cpds., pref. Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and/or Zn. In an example, addn. of 5% Pb nitrate to tobacco, lowered CO content of waste gas to 42% and NO content to 58% of quantities in untreated tobacco smoke.
