Cell-free, live but attenuated chickenpox virus for use in vaccine prodn., is prepd. by passaging virulent virus at 30-38 degrees C. on cultures of either human or animal diploid cells or on primary monkey cells, until attenuated, then the attenuated virus is recovered from the infected cells in the presence of a stabiliser. Vaccines prepd. from this attenuated virus are also claimed.
