The compact RF Gunn oscillator has unwanted modes sunpressed and a simplified cavity resonator contruction for frequency stabilisation. The cuttoff frequency of the waveguide section (7) is chosen higher than the Gunn oscillator's operating frequency. The Gunn element (s) is constructed as a coaxial element coupled to the waveguide section. The frequency stabilising cavity (6) is coupled to one of the waveguide section's openings. Where two Gunn elements (2, 3) are used they are arranged as two coaxial half wavelength devices parallel to a pair of posts (1). The holes (2) forming the coaxial outer conductors of the Gunn elements project partly into the waveguid section to give coupling.
