The tensioning device is for a vehicle safety belt system. Variation of the motion of the vehicle is transformed into a progressively increasing force exerted upon the webbing of the safety belt to prevent the safety belt becoming or remaining in a loose or untensioned condition around the person wearing it. There is a ratchet wheel on a roller, and a pawl pivoted next to it. There is a lever rotatable about the roller axis, with a small L-shaped lever pivoted on it. This knocks the pawl out of the notch of the ratched wheel when it hits a stop.
