Single cutter head tunnelling machine - has independent sets of cylinders for front and rear advancing members

The tunnelling machine with a single large cutting head (3) at the front, has its body supported by front pressure members (6) and rear pressure members (7). There are forced outwards and sideways from the machine against the sides of the tunnel. The machine is advanced by upper and lower pairs of cylinders (9) operated independently of the other. The upper and power pairs (9) are attached by pivots to the body (4) and the rear pressure members. The single upper and lower cylinders (10) are also attached by pivots to the body and the front pressure members. One type can also be operated to assist the other type.
