A process for the oxidative treatment sulfide -, sulfite - and thio sulfate hold strength sewage water

In order to achieve the oxidation of sulphide-, sulphite- and/or thiosulphate-containing waste waters to the sulphate stage, in place of the highly undesirable SO2, at most elemental sulphur being produced as bi-product, using oxygen-containing gases, the waste waters, if they are sulphide-containing, are first treated in an alkaline environment with industrially pure oxygen up to conversion of the sulphide into thiosulphate. The pH is then adjusted to 0 to 5 or, for waste waters which only contain sulphite, to 0 to 8, and the treatment with industrially pure oxygen is repeated or begun and continued up to complete formation of sulphate, where catalysts can be co-used. In the case of sulphide- and/or thiosulphate-containing waste waters, sulphur precipitates in this stage.
