The system controls the driver of a forging hammer. The foring process is terminated after a certain number of impacts. The remaining energy of the tool is measured after each impact and the measured value is converted into a signal which is stored. The measurement is obtained by measuring the deceleration of the driver or the anvil. The measured value is compared with the stored value of the previous impact. The cycle is broken and the foring is ended when the signals of consecutive strokes have values which are equal or which lie within a predetermined tolerance range. When the output values are nominally equal, a signal can be generated which produces an optical or acoustic warning or a signal which is fed into a machine control unit.
