The coal upgrading plant has a pneumatically controlled settling tank in which, by pulsation of the separating fluid, a settling of the minerals is achieved. A sensor fitted within the mineral layer controls the quantity of the heavy matter discharged and the intensity of pulsation. The sensor increases the intensity of pulsation only after the pre-set position and/or discharge opening area has been exceeded. The discharge mechanism for the heavy matter and the control system of the pneumatic valves are jointly controlled by the layer height-measuring sensor. The control system for the valves consists of an electronic impulse control for the compressed air supplied to the settling tank and/or for the separating fluid.
