The electrodes are applied on a transparent insulating layer on the substrate. A reading device reads signals stored in the sensor, and an overflow channel is situated on one side of the row of electrodes, for draining away excess signal charges. It has an output diode at one of its ends. The overflow channel consists of a strip electrode (2) running along the row of electrodes, with a terminal to which a voltage is applied, producing a majority carrier deplection layer under the strip electrode. At least one strip-like overflow transfer electrode (7) is provided over the space between the row of electrodes and the strip insulated from both of them. At least two voltages are applied to it, generating under it two different potential thresholds for the minority carriers.
