The wedge sluice valve is for high-pressure, large bore pipes, and has a pair of shutoff plates with sealing surfaces facing in opposite directions. A side chamber is built on to the pipe junction. The two flow pipes are shut off by inclined discs (5) which behave as a wedge thrust down into the junction. The discs are connected by a central hub (17) which sandwiches an auxiliary chamber (19) in the middle, blocked off by a pair of dished plates (20, 21). An operating rod (30) connects this central hub (17) to a hand wheel at the top of the side chamber. Rotation of the hand wheel lifts the discs (5) upwards, opening the sluice valve and providing a bypass path.
