The balance consists of a beam with a receptacle for the load and a scale for weights, and an indicating device for beam position. The system centre of gravity (S) is a little lower than is strictly necessary for the system equilibrium without load, so that pointer (8) deviation from equilibrium position can be calibrated in absolute mass differences between the weighted material and mass of the weights. There is a mass (M) acting as a counterweight at the lower end of the pointer (10). The sensitivity of the balance may be changed by varying the mass (M).
