A cement clinker calcining and cooling plant of the known type is constructed as a single rotary tube having a furnace section heated by a burner and directly connected to a coaxially mounted cooler section in the outlet end of which an air stream is admitted serving both as cooling medium and as combustion air for the furnace section. The burner and its associated holer are fixed to the rotary tube in the furnace section, thereby leaving the interior of the cooling section free. Sprinkler inserts are provided in the cooler section free. Sprinkler inserts are provided heated over the whole cross section of the rotary tube. The improvement ensures that the sprinkler units can be installed in the cooler section to provide a complete curtain of particles through which the cooling air must flow. In the known 'Solo' furnaces of this type, such units cannot be installed because of excessive wear on the lance type burner used, while in their absence, a dead space is formed below the lance interesting with the cooling process.
