Linear and flat-linked iron phthalocyanine polymers, with high conductivity, catalytic activity and acid resistance, are used as active catalysts on an activated carbon carrier, which is also coated with a carbon powder provided with hydrophobic basic surface groups; the catalyst interacts with the carbon powder. The polymers may also be cobalt phthalocyanines or a mixt. or iron- and cobalt-phthalocyanines. Phthalocyanine polymers contg. two or more other metals per macromolecule may also be used. The prods. are cathodes for fuel cells driven using oxygen or air in acid electrolyte solns. The cathodes contain no platinum, which is very expensive, but have a long working life.
