A wire shield support consists of a floor bar with caving shield hinged to it at the waste end by an interposed prop leg and with a roofbar hinged to the leading or coalface end of the shield. A trailing canopy (8) is hinged to the waste end of the roofbar (6) and is supported at the waste, with an L shaped template (17, 18) fitted at the waste end of the shield assembly. When a waste shield (2) is fitted between floor bar (1) and caving shield (4), the caving shield can then be hinged to this waste shield. Waste support legs (10) can be fitted both sides of the canopy between this and the floor bar, the legs hinged on both sides as fitted. These legs can operate between the waste shield and the canopy where a waste shield is being used.
