The control valve, comprises a cylindrical hollow body (9a) with a radial inlet (8) co-axial outlet (12a) and two further outlets (10b, 11b) on the cylinder axis. The upper of these (10b) connects with a radial pipe (10) in line (roughly) with the first outlet. The latter outlets (10b, 11b) are closed by sprung valves (10a, 11a) pipes from them lead to different parts of the exhaust system. The valves are free to slide on the reduced dia. portion (17d) of an axial spindle (17) fixed to a transverse diaphragm (15) dividing a chamber (14) on top of the valve body. Shoulders (17a, 17b)) on the spindle cause movement of the diaphragm to be converted into opening of one of the valves. Thsi movement is caused in turn by press. differences across the diaphragm, applied from a regulator unit which responds to engine speed through 2 connecting pipes (16, 16a).
