The furniture e.g. shelving has a joint of two horizontal and two vertical panels (1) in generally cruciform relation. To provide stability for the joint, the panels are mutually offset so that each panel has an edge engaged (1a, 1b) with a side of an adjacent panel. The engagement may be by the edge of the one panel being releasably entered into a groove, possibly a dovetail groove, in the side of the other panel. At their junction the panels form between them a tunnel (2) of square cross-section. The panels may be held together by a metal fitting at each end of that tunnel.
