Resonance effects leading to irregular operation of stepping motors are reduced by the division of each motor step impulse into two parts, but the resulting increase in frequency has limitations on motor top speed. this is overcome by making the intermediate step time variable and dependant upon the time period of the full step. This step variation allows optimum division in the intermediate speed range for the suppression of resonances, and at high speeds allows operation with full step impulses only, thus removing the previous high frequency limitation. The circuits employed may be digital in operation, or the intermediate steps may be generated in an analog circuit from the applied main control impulses.
