Reflected Gray code unit - has code disc plates each with small number of coding slots and mounted on shaft

The Gray Code unit, pref. for a reflected binary Gray Code, uses disc code plates with coding slots. The measurement of large lengths with adequate resolution does not require excessive code slots of high precision. Several code plates, each with a small number of coding slots, are connected by a shaft as in a rotary counting mechanism. Scanning devices are suitably arranged wrt. the coding slots of each plate. The code plates are all identically shaped. The number of code changeover positions depends on the base radix of the code raised to the power of the number of code slots.
