A magnetic separator for granular material, e.g. for separating ground corundum particles, has a vibratory conveyor (1) conveying the mixture from a hopper, passing successive magnets (5, 6) and subjecting the material attached to them to a pulsating magnetic field. This field can be alternatively reversed. This field can be produced by an electromagnetic system. These magnets can be used to removed magnetic material and also separate the non-magnetic material. The electromagnetic devices to produce a rotating magnetic field have a maximum of three poles. Magnetic drums may be used.
