The shaft seal assembly is for a drive shaft (11) of a pump (1) handling adhesive. The shaft extends through a chamber (21) filled with a liquid medium (22), which chamber is separated from the pressure chamber (16) of the pump by a first shaft seal (18) and from the outside by a second seal (19). The medium may be water and the seals may be radial seals. The two sets of seals may be arranged between two shaft bearings (12, 13), one bearing (12) being a slide bearing arranged at the side of the pump pressure chamber. The pump may be a gear pump.
