Disc brake with annular brake linings - has radial vanes in car wheel directing cooling air over brake housing

The disc brake for a car has two rims (33,34) bolted (5) together and to the wheel hub (4). The inner faces of the rims form braking surfaces which are acted on by the annular brake pads (9,10). The fixed brake pad (10) is attached to a ribbed cylinder (82) which is attached to the wheel suspension linkage (2). The other brake pad (9) is attached to a stepped annular piston (81) which slides inside the cylinder (82). Slots allow cooling air to pass over the surface of the brake pad support plates. In addition external ribs on the surfaces (31,32) act as a centrifugal fan and draw cooling air over the rim surfaces.
