Detergent compsn. contains diphenyl-distyryl cpd. as whitener - and triphenyl-methyl-immonium dye, giving good whitening effect

Detergent compsn. with improved whitening effect, contg. surfactants, inorganic and/or organic builders, optical whitener and dye, contains 0.01-1 wt. % diphenyl-distyryl cpd. (I) as whitener and triphenylmethylimmonium dye(s) (II) in a (I):(II) wt. ratio of 5000-100:1, pref. 3000-200:1. (I) and (II) have the formulae: (in which R1 and R2 and H, OMe or Cl. = of R3-5 is SO3X. X is Na, K or NH4). The whitening effect is better than that obtd. using certain other dyes, which cause a considerable colour tinge. Pref. cpds. used are (Ia) with R1 and R2 = H, and X = Na; and (IIa) with R3 = H and R4 and R5 = SO3Na or SO3NH4 or with R3 = SO3Na and R4 and R5 = H. E.g., the whiteness of cotton samples after 10 wash cycles using a detergent contg. 0.2% (Ia) and 0.0001% (IIa) was 198, cf. 195 and 192 if C.I. Disperse Blue 87 or C.I. Direct Green 5 was used instead of (IIa).
