The watercraft with a variable speed, reversible propulsion device uses a hydraulic propulsion system with a swashplate pump inside the hull and a motor in a streamlined nacelle underneath it. There is a straight drive to a shrouded propeller. The power unit is a constant-speed, pref. Diesel, engine. Reduction gearing may be fitted. Between the engine/reduction gearing and the pump there is a set of synchronous gears with a freewheel, enabling power to the pump to be supplied from an alternative unit. This may be a standby engine, or the power unit for a second propulsion system with similar synchronous gears.
