Piston with cast iron crown and aluminium skirt - has annular cooling chamber between upper piston ring groove and combustion chamber trough

The piston skirt (1) is of pressed aluminium and the piston crown (2) of spheroidal graphite iron. An annular cooling chamber (3) is formed as an open channel below the piston crown during the manufacturing process and filled with a salt. The piston crown is provided with swallow tail recesses (5) and bored recesses (6, 7). The aluminium shaft has corresponding projections which completely fill the recesses and bores when pressed. The salt is removed through suitable apertures after the pressing process. Additional anchorage between the two sections at the gudgeon pin bearing region is provided by arms (8).
