The demonstration unit for displaying carpets or other flat articles on supports includes a feed or advance mechanism which consists of two guide rails (10,11) mounted parallel to each other in a common horizontal plane and two conveyor units which pass the carpets from one guide to the other. Each conveyor unit has a transport carriage (24,25) which can be moved between the guide rails whilst a stepped conveyor (43,44), which can be moved in both directions, is provided for each guide rail to set down and take up the carpets on and off of the carriage (24,25). A conveyor (32) is mounted at the side of the path of movement of the carriage (24) and the conveyor path of the stepped conveyor (43) adjoining the conveyor (32) ends selectively in the area of the transport carriage (24) or the lift conveyor (32).
