High purity, antimony trichloride prepn. - from antimony sulphide in soln. by treatment with hydrogen chloride gas

Prepn. of SbCl3 from Sb2So, esp. from ores with high Pb and As contents, by heating in a common non-aq. solvent at below the b.pt. of SbCl3, and reacting with HCl gas. Solvent is pref. SbCl3. SbCl3 is used in prepn. of Sb2O3 flame retardant for plastics and white pigment. Highly-pure SbCl3 is obtd. by a simple single-stage process, without use of high temps., expensive corrosion-resistant materials or the need to remove water by distn.
