Ski safety harness has a toe holder (23) fitted to a plate (21) which is held on a pivot (13) at a point as far away from the ski centre line (14) as possible. This vertical pivot is also as close to the shoe as possible. At the front of the plate is fitted catch device (37) holding a spring loaded peg (22) which catches in a depression in a striker (25) fixed to the edge of the ski upper surface. In the event of a frontal collision the plate carrying the toe holder swings round the pivot thus freeing the catch (37) so that the shoe slides out of the harness. This method lessens the possibility of the skier tumbling forwards through the toe being held in the harness after the heel has been released.
