Rolling direction determination of metallic products uses coherent light beam (2) directed onto metal surface for measurement of intensity distribution which is evaluated. The direction of maximum intensity is assigned to the direction vertical to the rolling direction. A laser (1) can be used as light source. The intensity distribution is measured by two rotating photodetectors (5). The two photodetectors (5) are arranged symmetrically to the distance of radiation and are moved by means of a rotation device (6). The maximum of the sum of photocurrents is determined in dependence on the position of the detectors. Radiation is vertical to the surface.
