Pump has a cylindrical casing (14) which is submerged in a tank or similar container. A vertical shaft (21) through the centre of the casing carries an impeller (20) on its end. The impeller has an inner core (28) with a hemi-spherical surface (29) to which centrifugal blades (26) are attached. The blades are surrounded by an outer rotor section (31) which has an inner surface fitting to the blades and an outer surface in the form of a cylinder which fits inside the cylindrical casing with a small annular gap between them. This enables the pump to have a centrifugal impeller inside a plain cylindrical casing so that it can produce a high head without needing an elaborate shaped casing.
